This is the first comprehensive publication on English, Scottish, Welsh,and Irish paintings and pastels by artists born before 1841in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Ranging in date from the late 16th through the third quarter of the 19th century, the 140 works included are by such major artists as Peake, Lely, Hogarth, Reynolds, Gainsborough, Lawrence, Turner, Constable, and Burne-Jones. While the collection is particularly rich in portraiture, it also contains genre paintings and landscapes. Each painting is reproduced in color and carries full cataloguing data as well as a generous selection of comparative illustrations, among them pendants, related paintings, and prints.

Brightly hued, highly finished, and relatively large in scale, pastels in the 18th century were regarded as a type of painting and displayed like oils. The powdery, vibrant crayons are particularly suited to capturing the skin tones and evanescent expressions that characterize the most lifelike portraits. 
Pastels cannot be permanently displayed because they are susceptible to fading, and they rarely travel. Until now, there has never been an exhibition in the U.S. devoted to these intriguing and important works. Pastel Portraits, the companion book to an exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum, presents over 40 exquisite works by French, Italian, English, Swiss, and American artists. It offers a technical discussion of the materials and explains why pastels achieved widespread popularity in the 1700s and how the fabrication of this medium intersected with Enlightenment thinking.

This is the catalog of an exhibition held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York from October 30, 1989 to January 21, 1990. It contains 127 plates of Canaletto's artwork, almost all in color, as well as an appendix that contains 5 documents in the artist's handwriting. Also included is an essay by the foremost expert on Canaletto, J. G. Links, who helped organize this exhibition, entitled "Canaletto: A Biographical Sketch". Four other essays, "Canaletto as Artist of the Urban Scene" by Michael Levey; "The Taste for Canaletto" by Francis Haskell; "Fantasy and Reality in Canaletto's Drawings" by Alessandro Bettagno; and, "The Development of Canaletto's Painting Technique" by Viola Pemberton-Pigott, all add insight into this great master and his art. This catalogue supplies basic information on all paintings, oil sketches, and finished pastels by European artists born before 1865 belonging to The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The name, dates, and nationality of each artist are given; medium, dimensions, inscriptions, and accession information are supplied for all works; each text is accompanied by an illustration of the work described. The Department of European Paintings has custodial responsibility for most of these pictures, but also included here are works given to, bequeathed to, or acquired for other departments of the Museum—most importantly the Robert Lehman Collection.  The Museum's holdings number approximately 2,500 works. The greatest strengths are in the areas of French painting (about 800 works) and Italian painting (about 700 works); the balance is represented by the Dutch, British, Netherlandish, German, Spanish, and Flemish schools. This catalogue presents the collection chronologically and by national and regional school. Entries by artist are ordered in accordance with their known or implied birth dates; the works of individual artists are also arranged chronologically.
