Ever since my days as a student, economists, doctors, physiologists, biologists, and engineers have come to me with queries of a statistical nature. This book is the product of my long interest in practical solutions to such problems. Study of the literature and my own ideas have repeat­ edly led me to improved methods, which will be established here and applied to instructive examples taken from the natural and social sciences. Thus, I hope to help the reader avoid the many fruitless direc­ tions in which I worked at first. The examples are not artificially con­ structed from theoretical considerations but are instead taken from real situations; consequently, many of the examples require detailed explana­ tion. The presentation of the basic mathematical concepts is, I hope, as brief as possible without becoming incomprehensible. Some rather long theoretical arguments have been necessary, but, whenever possible, references for the more difficult proofs have been made to good text­ books already in existence. There would be no point in developing again the mathematical theories which have been presented clearly and in detail by Kolmogorov, Caratheodory, and Cramer.

Originally, my intention was to write a "History of Algebra", in two or three volumes. In preparing the first volume I saw that in ancient civiliza tions geometry and algebra cannot well be separated: more and more sec tions on ancient geometry were added. Hence the new title of the book: "Geometry and Algebra in Ancient Civilizations". A subsequent volume on the history of modem algebra is in preparation. It will deal mainly with field theory, Galois theory and theory of groups. I want to express my deeply felt gratitude to all those who helped me in shaping this volume. In particular, I want to thank Donald Blackmore Wagner (Berkeley) who put at my disposal his English translation of the most interesting parts of the Chinese "Nine Chapters of the Art of Arith metic" and of Liu Hui's commentary to this classic, and also Jacques Se siano (Geneva), who kindly allowed me to use his translation of the re cently discovered Arabic text of four books of Diophantos not extant in Greek. Max Planck's famous lecture of 1900 expressed quantum theory in its essential form, but his statement was just the beginning. This volume features seventeen early papers that developed quantum theory into its modern form. These papers appeared from 1917 to 1926 and were written by the leading physicists of the early twentieth century.The collection begins with Einstein's "On the Quantum Theory of Radiation," an illuminating derivation of Planck's Law. Other important early papers by Ehrenfest, Bohr, Born, Van Vleck, Kuhn, and others prepared the way for the "turning point" in quantum mechanics. Das vorliegende Buch ist aus einer langjahrigen Beschaftigung mit den praktischen Anwendungen hervorgegangen. Seit meiner Studenten­ zeit sind immer wieder Volkswirtschaftler, Mediziner, Physiologen, Biologen und Ingenieure mit statistischen Fragen zu mir gekommen. Durch N achdenken und Literaturstudium habe ich immer bessere Methoden kennengelernt. Diese Methoden sollen hier begrundet und auf moglichst lehrreiche Beispiele aus den N atur- und Sozialwissen­ schaften angewandt werden. So hoffe ich, dem Leser manche Irrwege, die ich anfangs gegangen bin, zu ersparen. Die Beispiele sind nicht aus der Theorie heraus konstruiert, sondern der Praxis entnommen; daher waren bei manchen Beispielen ausfiihrliche Erlauterungen notwendig. Die mathematischen Grundbegriffe habe ich so kurz wie moglich, aber doch, wie ich hoffe, verstandlich dargestellt. Manchmal waren langere theoretische Ausfiihrungen notwendig, aber wo immer moglich wurde fur schwierigere Beweise auf gute existierende Lehrbucher ver­ wiesen. Es hat keinen Sinn, mathematische Theorien, die bei KOL­ MOGOROFF, CARATHEODORY oder CRAMER ausfiihrlich und deutlich dar­ gestellt sind, noch einmal zu entwickeln. Die Elemente der Funktionentheorie und der LEBEsGuEschen Inte­ grationstheorie wurden als bekannt vorausgesetzt. Das bedeutet natur­ lich nicht, daB ein Leser ohne diese Vorbereitungen das Buch nicht verstehen kann: er muB eben gewisse Satze ohne Beweis annehmen oder sich auf die mehr elementaren Teile beschranken, in denen nur Differential-und Integralrechnung und Analytische Geometrie voraus­ gesetzt wird (Kap.1 bis 4, 10 und 12).
