Avner served as close personal advisor, author of speeches and diplomatic secretary of four prime ministers: Levi Eshkol, Golda Meir, Yitzhak Rabin and Menachem Begin. In his wide-ranging autobiographical work, Avner provides a rare glimpse into the inner circle of the Prime Minister's Bureau, in the intimate moments of the nation's leaders. Avner documents some of the most dramatic events in Israel's history: the Six Day War, the Yom Kippur War, the Entebbe Operation, the peace treaty with Egypt and the bombing of the Iraqi reactor. He describes the ideological dilemmas and political party struggles, the diplomatic embarrassments and the military disasters, the weaknesses and the points of crisis - but also the moments of victory and heroism, brilliant political maneuvers, blazing speeches and historic achievements.
