Some ask the reader to complete mathematical developments in the text, others are numerical examples, others are used to develop related material, and several serve to expand the reader's intellectual horizons to deeper mathematical or philosophical questions. This text had been the principal reference for the pension mathematics topic on the Society of Actuaries examination program for more than twenty years.</p>
