The first comprehensive survey of Donald Moffett's important investigations into art history, paint, and form, this beautifully designed and fully illustrated catalogue will provide deep insights into the breadth and range of the artist's practice over the past twenty years. Often provocative, and at times humorous, Moffett's works are always beautifully rendered. An astute and thoughtful painter, Moffett knows the power of the artist to critique the world at large, and his love of Goya and Morandi are manifested in his ability to blend the subtle with the outlandish, the image with social critique. As with much of Moffett's work, he is fearless in addressing issues that still resonate today, such as the rights of openly gay men and women to serve in the military; the aesthetics of gay subcultures; and the rampant scandals that mar the politics of our age, and in so doing he engages us in larger universal meditations on loss, alienation, life, and death. Organized by Valerie Cassel Oliver, curator at the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, Donald Moffett: The Extravagant Vein is the first survey exhibition and catalogue of this artist's prolific practice. The show and catalogue will present work created over the last two decades, bringing together nine important bodies of work that interrogate and blur the lines of painting through the incorporation of nontraditional materials and other media such as video and photography. Moffett's fascination with such media as video projection on paintings reflects his longstanding investigation of light and its relationship with flat, static surfaces. Regardless of format, Moffett's works are consistently built around deep and critical frameworks that engage the audience and help them to understand not only painting, but also the political and social issues that shape our contemporary lives. This catalogue will include an exhibition checklist, color reproductions of featured works, and the artist's biography and bibliography and promises to serve as a scholarly reader and a critical and lasting document. It is the first such survey of this artist's work to be published.

Walls Turned Sideways accompanies the largest museum presentation to investigate the criminal justice system in the US. What is the social role and responsibility of the artist in times of political urgency? What functions can only art and artists fulfill in the political landscape? This catalog discusses the work of more than 30 artists from across the nation, with works spanning the past 40 years, who address the criminal justice system and the prison industrial complex. The book’s title derives from a quote by political activist and author Angela Davis: “Walls turned sideways are bridges.” Artists featured include Josh Begley, Zach Blas, Luis Camnitzer, James Drake, Chris Burden, Martin Wong, Andrea Fraser, Coco Fusco and Paula Heredia, Titus Kaphar, Kapwani Kiwanga, Autumn Knight, Deana Lawson, Shaun Leonardo, Glenn Ligon, Lucky Pierre, Mark Menjivar, Trevor Paglen, Anthony Papa, Laurie Jo Reynolds, Dread Scott and Rodrigo Valenzuela. This is the first monograph on the influential yet elusive artist Simon English. Away from the Brit Art hype of the 1990s, English's oeuvre has developed from the early paintings to a gritty treatment of desire and fantasy. Peter Hujar (1934-1987), Mark Morrisroe (1959-1989) and Jack Smith (1932-1989) all charted that uncertain territory between the subversion and the assimilation of difference, exploring how non-mainstream sexuality and gender has been experienced and perceived over the decades. Their works follow a complex parable, from the 60s right up to the end of the 80s, underlining the risks inherent in mixing art and life, as well as formal research and political struggles. At times sociological, at others highly personal, this volume compares and juxtaposes the oeuvres of these three pioneers of queer American visual art, taking the reader along an itinerary ranging from the banal to the elegiac, from the trashy to the refined, and from life to death, moving through both the various genders (male, female and transgender) and sexual orientations (heterosexuality, homosexuality and bisexuality), showing how these have been recounted through both underground and mainstream culture.
