While few historians would dispute the importance of the printed book in the development of domestic design in 18th- and 19th-century Britain, this is the first major study to trace the evolution of architectural ideas during the period by examining the literary output of architects. It is a work of extraordinary scholarship, based on an extensive search of dozens of major library collections, that will serve as a standard resource for researchers and librarians, book dealers and collectors. Most of the book is devoted to descriptions of hundreds of books and periodicals containing original designs for domestic structures. The earliest title described is Colen Campbell's Vitruvius Britannicus (1715), an important Palladian manifesto and the first book to illustrate a series of the author's own executed designs for dwellings, intended to redirect and reform British architectural taste, and the latest title is Supplement (1842) to John Claudius Loudon's Encyclopedia. Related materials on agriculture, landscape design, drawing, and perspective also are covered. Each entry includes a bibliographic description of all known editions and a commentary that describes and analyzes the text and plates, focusing in particular on the author's ideas and approaches to design issues. Appendixes to the principal entries provide a checklist of additional handbooks and manuals by important authors such as Crunden, Halfpenny, Langley, Nicholson, Pain, Richardson, Salmon, and Swan, and books showing domestic interiors. There is also a valuable short-title chronological list, and a list of printers, publishers, and booksellers. In a lengthy introductory essay, Archer discusses architecture and the book trade, the format and content of the books, and aspects of architectural theory and design-including ideas of "character" and "retirement," dwelling types such as villas, cottages, and row houses, model housing for laborers, and town and village planning. John Archer is Associate Professor in the Humanities Program at the University of Minnesota.

The developmental origins of human behavior are often seen as having parallels with the natural world of animal behavior. Researchers in ethology, the biological study of animal behavior, have amassed an enormous body of research, but the psychological study of child development has often ignored the findings, with the notable exception of John Bowlby's use of imprinting as a basis for a novel theory of human attachment.The author of this new book, a psychologist who has carried out research in ethology, evaluates the impact of several decades of ethological work on developmental psychology. Most human violence is carried out by men; yet a book which highlights this, with the title "Male Violence", aims to be very different from one simply called "Human Violence". The contributors to "Male Violence" take as their starting point not the generality of aggression in the human species, but the predominantly male nature of most acts of violence. Male violence is clearly a problem in the modern world, and may even be "the" major source of human suffering. It is, however, intractable, as it is deeply rooted in biology and culture, and is supported by male vested interests of many kinds. The book contains contributions from psychologists who have studied the many faces of male violence: in childhood and adulthood; on the street and in the home; towards men, women and children; and in its sexual and non-sexual forms. Such varied topics, together with emphasis on naturalistic rather than laboratory-based investigations, distinguish these researchers from those aiming to make generalizations about human aggression without considering issues of sex and gender. The purpose of this book is to elucidate the general principles underlying animal aggression. Aggressive encounters occur even in very simple organisms, and are at the roots of human conflict. A general framework is provided by dividing forms of aggression according to their function - protection of the individual, offspring defence and competition. Within each functional group, the principles underlying the variety of aggressive behaviour in different species, the sexes and different life-cycle stages, are considered, and this is followed by a discussion of the mechanisms through which animals achieve the various functional ends. Aggression is viewed as one possible solution to a recurrent set of problems animals encounter in their natural environments. In any one case, the control and form of aggression are seen as the result of the interaction of past evolutionary environments, developmental influences and current circumstances.
