Il suscite des sentiments dont l'angoisse ne peut être évacuée. Il provoque le saisissement par lequel on reconnaît un des pouvoirs de la littérature : donner aux mots toute leur puissance explicative et figurative, plutôt que de s'en servir pour recouvrir et voiler. C'est comme si l'écrivain levait ce voile, non pas pour nous faire peur, mais pour que l'on voie et comprenne.
