His story begins with the shaping for "D" company into a fighting force and follows its progress from D Day to the Battle of the Bulge, the Rhine crossing and the blitzkrieg towards the Baltic. Undaunted by the high fatality rate, Anderson re-volunteered after being wounded in Normandy, only to be taken prisoner later. Having escaped from the Germans, he led a small group, completely unarmed, on to capture two German villages. Anderson also questions the decision made to embark upon this operation - was the loss of life justified?
