Maram al-Masri is from Lattakia in Syria, now settled in Paris. She studied English Literature at Damscus University before starting publishing her poetry in Arab magazines in the 1970s. Thus far her work has been translated into eight languages. Her poetry collections include Red Cherry on the White Floor and I look at you. Most recently, in English, she has published Barefoot Souls (Arc 2015) also translated by Theo Dorgan. Theo Dorgan was born in Cork and has published five books of poetry. His most recent collections are Greek (Dedalus 2012) and Nine Bright Shiners (Dedalus 2014). He has published two prose accounts of sailing journeys, Sailing for Home (Penguin) and Time on the Ocean (New Island 2013). He published Making Way, a novel, in 2013. He has translated a previous collection of Maram al-Masri's, Barefoot Souls (Arc 2015).

She writes about the status of women, seeking to reconcile her role as a mother with her writing work. The terrible war that has devastated her native country since 2011 has painfully affected her.&nbsp; Also included in The Abduction is The Bread of Letters, comprised of two poems addressing the act of writing: "Isn't the act of writing / an outrageous act in itself? Writing / is getting to know / one's innermost thoughts. / Yes, I am scandalous / because I show my truth and my nakedness of woman. / Yes I am scandalous / because I scream my pain and my hope, / my desire, my hunger and my thirst."
