El general Felipe Angeles, escribe Friedrich Katz en su biografia de Pancho Villa, represento una excepcion a todas la reglas, tanto del Mexico porfiriano como del Mexico revolucionario. Fue el unico alto oficial del ejercito federal que se unio a las fuerzas revolucionarias y tambien uno de los muy pocos gene¬rales mexicanos, fueran federales o revolucionarios, que era a la vez un intelectual en el mas amplio sentido del termino. Ensenaba matematicas y ciencias de la artilleria, y escribio trabajos muy conocidos sobre ambos campos. Tambien mostraba un profundo interes por la literatura y era un hombre culto. Ademas, era uno de los muy pocos militares que gozaba tanto de prestigio nacional como de popularidad en gran parte del pais. Ante todo, fue uno de los pocos ideologos que produjo la revolucion. Tendria una enorme influencia sobre Villa y sobre su ejercito en diferentes sentidos: como especialista en artilleria, como estratega, como organizador, como dirigente ideo¬logico y como intermediario con los estadounidenses. Con la Division del Norte, Felipe Angeles participo en la toma de Torreon y fue, junto a Francisco Villa, artifice de la batalla de Zacatecas donde quedo destruido el Ejercito Federal y sellada la caida de Huerta. Tambien fue decisiva su intervencion para que Emiliano Zapata enviara delegados a la Convencion de Aguascalientes y luego para que en esta se aprobara el Plan de Ayala. Ocho ensayos conforman este volumen. Friedrich Katz estudia la controvertida actitud de Angeles durante la Decena Tragica. Adolfo Gilly recorre el proceso judi¬cial posterior y otros episodios de la vida del general. Felipe Avila Espinosa se ocupa de su intervencion en la Convencion de Aguascalientes. Javier Garciadiego trae a luz. las semejanzas entre Angeles y Carranza en la rivalidad que los contrapuso hasta la muerte. Pedro Salmeron analiza la historiografia sobre el papel de Angeles en las campanas de la Division del Norte. Odile Guilpain estudia sus relaciones politicas y personales durante su exi¬lio en Estados Unidos, y los motivos de su regreso. Ruben Osorio expone el desarrollo del Consejo de Guerra que lo sentencio a muerte, y reproduce los pasajes de su defensa en que, sabiendose de antemano condenado, explico sus ideas, sus razones y sus motivos. El general Luis Garfias traza un esbozo biografico de Angeles en tanto militar. Siete escritos del propio Felipe Angeles en diferentes circunstancias de su vida completan el volumen. Ellos daran al lector una vision mas amplia de su personalidad, sus ideas politicas, sus preocupaciones intelectuales y su estilo literario.
