The Longing Pier is not an angry story, and Irene is not an angry character. She is resolved and leads us through a spritually redemptive story. Irene spends all her life longing, never understanding why she suffers from it. Then comes also a spiritual longing, as though Irene is working hard to salvage what she can out of a religion that has ultimately left her confused. And finally she dose salvage a few good things: forgiveness, the consciousness of grace, and the possibility of healing. Throughout the story, Irene is moving toward understanding her longing...and the consequences of the absence of God in her life.Irene grew up believing that God might abandon her, and fear of being without him controls most of her young life. As an adult she begins to have doubts about her faith in him. The story comes around to a kind of spirtual and sexual awakening: a kind of journey that we find personally interesting because it happens to many of us. We have to move from one understanding of God to another and from one understanding of sexuality to another.
