Description:
Poetry. Latinx Studies. Introduction by Francisco Aragón and Ana Patricia Rodríguez. This bilingual Salvadoran poetry anthology seeks to challenge the traditional concept of nationality and explore the diverse identities that coexist in the world of Salvadoran poetry. Considering the blurring of identities and the elasticity of national borders, Kalina not only introduces the work of poets that reside in El Salvador and write in Spanish; it is also an exposition of the work of poets that have emigrated and write in the language of their adopted country. The poems offer both Spanish-speaking and English-speaking readers an array of linguistic, thematic and aesthetic contrasts and likenesses. The first of its kind, this anthology will provide an opportunity for Salvadoran poets and Salvadoran-American poets to establish a poetic dialogue amongst themselves and with the poetic community at large.
"This anthology rocks and hums with the music of El Salvador's current poetic voices, the children of Salarrué and Roque Dalton. I'm drawn to their meditations on identity, to their streets and their foliage, their images and themes: love food, landscape, home--and the darker ones: hunger, loss, death, war. From cover to cover these poems come at you, vivid and various and genuine."--Joseph Millar
"The editors at Kalina have produced an anthology beyond anthologies. THEATRE UNDER MY SKIN collects the writing of three generations of Salvadoran poets affected by war and emigration. The essays will instruct you, and the poetry will confirm in you that true poetry transcends national boundaries and aesthetics. Because of the waves of emigration, Salvadoran writing is now worldwide. THEATRE UNDER MY SKIN is an enormous achievement and a considerable contribution to World Poetry."--Marvin Bell
