Ethnic Chinese in Singapore and Malaysia: A Dialogue Between Tradition and Modernity

Nineteen articles are presented from a June/July 2001 international conference of the same name organized by three academic organizations in Singapore. Contributors were encouraged to adopt a comparative approach with regard to the different populations of ethnic Chinese in the two countries under question or in terms of their changing positions in traditional agricultural society versus modern industrial society. The papers are organized under the broad category headings of population and society; politics, identity, and education; culture and entrepreneurship; religion; and literature.
