About the Author\nNorman Girvan is a Professor and Director of the Consortium of Graduate School of Social Sciences, University of the West Indies/University of Guyana. His academic work over the past thirty years has covered issues related to capital flows, debt and relations with international financial institutions; foreign investment and transnational corporations; dependency and underdevelopment; technology transfer and development; and empowerment and development. He is author and co-author of ten books and monographs and of a number of academic publications, and is also editor of several books on the political economy of Caribbean development. Besides his academic appointments, Girvan has worked as Director of Planning in the Government of Jamaica, as a Senior Officer at the United Nations Centre on Transnational Corporations. He has also been consultant for national, regional and international organizations.
