Questo libro, dopo avere ricostruito tempi e modi del lungo e intenso rapporto di amicizia, nel nome di Urbino, tra il letterato e il pittore, propone una serrata indagine filologica e documentaria, fondata sul primo manoscritto della Lettera, tutto di mano del solo Castiglione. Dimostra che l'autore fu unicamente il letterato, che la elaboro e scrisse, come allora era in uso, "in persona" di Raffaello (cioe, a suo nome e per suo conto), e ovviamente con la sua diretta collaborazione soprattutto per le notizie sugli aspetti propriamente tecnici del grande progetto che il pittore aveva sperimentalmente avviato, interrotto pero dalla sua prematura morte: eseguire con nuove procedure e nuovi strumenti il rilievo architettonico delle ruine dei monumenti antichi di Roma.
