Considerado un seudónimo del autor, ha habido múltiples conjeturas sobre la verdadera identidad de Fernández de Avellaneda, entre ellos, Lope de Vega, algunos amigos suyos o el mismo Cervantes. El Quijote de Avellaneda comienza con insultos a Cervantes ("Como casi es comedia la historia de Don Quijote de la Mancha"...) y sigue provocando el autor hasta Cervantes respondió al ataque y publicó la 2ª parte de Don Quijote al año siguiente, donde Cervantes ridiculiza El Quijote de Avellaneda a intervalos frecuentes dentro de su historia.
