Alexander Calder

Alexander Calder (1898-1976) celebrated American sculptor and artist. Calder's distinguished career spanned much of the 20th century and he is acclaimed as the most influential sculptor of recent times. Born into a family of eminent, though more classically trained artists, Calder utilized his inventive genius to radically change the course of modern art. He began by developing a new method of sculpting ¿ bending and twisting wire ¿ essentially "drawing" three-dimensional figures in space. He is famous for the invention of the mobile, whose suspended, abstract elements move and balance in changing harmony. Calder also dedicated himself to outdoor sculpture in steel and many of his works grace public plazas in cities throughout the world.
