The fifth volume in the "Voices of Memory" series is devoted to the youngest prisoners of the Auschwitz-Birkenau Concentration and Death Camps: the children who were born there and their mothers. Helena Kubica, the author of this volume, spent many years studying the former Camps' records and large collection testimonies given by survivors. She has also painstakingly collected the photographs that are presented in this volume. From her extensive research, what emerges is nightmarish reality of the unimaginable suffering, desperation, and the enormity of the crime that was committed by the Nazi and SS medical workers at the Auschwitz and Birkenau Camps. These pseudoscientific experiments along with the torments the surviving individuals, endured left psychological and often physical scars. The tragedy experienced by expectant mothers inside the Camp, was not only the complete opposite of joy that motherhood so often brings; moreover, it was above all the absolute violation of natural law, dignity, and these individuals' fundamental human rights.
