Hamilton Bower was a captain in the 17th Bengal Cavalry when he undertook this voyage ostensibly on a geographical expedition, travels of these kinds were often ones of reconnaissance and intelligence reports were prepared by them. Further more Bower was also the officer commissioned to track down the murderer of Andrew Dalgelsh. The book has 50 illustrations. His name is also attached to a document in Sanskrit about medicine: "The Bower Document".
