Lyonel Feininger
Description:
The series of eleven Halle (Germany) pictures, created in the years 1929 to 1931, represents a high point in the oeuvre of Lyonel Feininger. The unique complexity of a city portrait is reexamined and fully developed in this volume. Confiscated by the Nazis, lost, then rediscovered in 2006 in a German private collection... In the summer of 2009, after lengthy negotiations, the surrender of the painting "Red Tower I" by Lyonel Feininger (1871-1956) to the Foundation Moritzburg in Halle was considered a sensation. The picture belongs to the series of Halle images created between 1929 and 1931. His Halle series takes a special position both in his oeuvre and in the art of the 20th Century. Through the style of this work, the elements of Cubism, Futurism and Expressionism synthesized in its own way, Feininger has become the innovator of the architectural motif in painting. Such an intense city portrait is unique in the history of late modernism. This makes the subject available in a comprehensive way. It takes the two exhibition catalogs The Halle Images of 1991 and Halle Images: Nature Notes from 2000 and connects the content with current research on the work. Additionally, it represents all previously created work. The large-format presentation of the 11 paintings and 29 charcoal drawings are supplemented by sketches and photographs and for the first time includes a color reproduction of the Red Tower. This publication is thereby the standard work on the subject. German text.
