Egon Friedell wurde am 21. Januar 1878 als Sohn des jüdischen Tuchfabrikanten Moriz Friedmann in Wien geboren und starb am 16. März 1938 ebendort. Nach Absolvierung seiner germanistischen und philosophischen Studien arbeitete er zuerst in seiner Heimatstadt als freier Schriftsteller, Kritiker und Schauspieler. Mit der Machtübernahme der Nationalsozialisten 1933 in Deutschland und dem spätere Anschluß Österreichs wurde seine Arbeit immer stärker behindert. Verfolgt durch die Nazis schied er am 16. März 1938 freiwillig aus dem Leben. Er wurde auf dem Wiener Zentralfriedhof begraben.
