Foundations for LIfe: A Curriculum Creating Freedom From Addictions

Drug overdose deaths increased 30 percent in the United States from 2019 to 2020, according to the CDC, and are now a leading cause of death for young adults. [1]

Finally, a Bible-based addiction recovery curriculum that does more than merely manage addiction, but through the truth and grace of Jesus, provides complete freedom from it. The author had an encounter with Jesus in April 1989 that delivered him from his ongoing alcohol and drug use, yet has been touched with compassion for those who have struggled for decades and have not experienced the freedom God promises to be available through Christ. Frustrated at the mixed results from the 12 Step programs, this author sought God diligently for Biblical keys to unlock the spiritual prison cells most addicts found themselves trapped in. Combining a deep experiential love from our Heavenly Father through what is commonly called the Toronto Blessing or the 'Fathers Blessing' while attending over 20 conferences there, God called pastor Chris to Tulsa, Oklahoma to study at the feet of Kenneth E Hagin at Rhema Bible Training Center. It was here, while attending a lecture taught by Rev. Doug Jones in his Faith Foundations class, that suddenly, in almost an instant, he saw how the keys to unlocking every addiction were to be found in the simplicity of the Lord's prayer. Upon graduation, only weeks after being married to his bride, Karen, he felt impressed to return to his hometown of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, to perform an outreach into Debra-Dynes's assisted living project, where seven crack houses were operating openly, and where the drug trade ruled and affected the entire community. Into this dark morass of human existence, he was sent with this message, and 22 brave people agreed to commit to a six-month recovery program with addictions ranging from cigarettes to crack, heroin, and cocaine.
The only requirement was, that students had to continually be willing to take the next lesson, no matter what life's circumstances threw at them, and 2 years later, 19 of the 22 students graduated from the course, and remain alcohol, drug, and even tobacco-free, now more than 20 years after the course was taught.
During that time, God led the author on many faith adventures, to eventually end up in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where it all began, to pursue his master's degree in practical ministry from Oral Roberts University, where this curriculum was written in fulfillment for his Capstone project. After researching the theology and results of several other well-known recovery programs, it is the opinion of this author, that this curriculum is the best addiction recovery material ever written,
