Then, on that fateful night in May, everyone in the county who had a police scanner was glued to it. The people that lived near Stephanie were calling into the Sheriff’s office in a panic. They wanted to make sure they were safe as they heard there was an armed and dangerous man hiding in the woods ready to have a shootout with the cops. There was something about a woman in a cabin and she couldn’t leave because of this mad man. They heard that the County Sheriff, the State Patrol, the City Police, State Fish and Game officers and a SWAT team with an armored car were all headed into the woods in a very remote area of the county. People listened as the Sheriff’s officers were communicating thru the radio that the man had threatened to kill his girlfriend with a chainsaw, shoot her son and was ready to shoot it out with the cops and die. There were no names that came across the scanner but many people knew who the suspects were. The county was collectively listening for almost five hours before the scanner went quiet. It was a dangerous situation and the Sheriff finally called for radio silence. The tension in the county was relieved only when the newspaper story came out 48 hours later, but that was just the beginning of the nightmare for Alex and Stephanie.
