What’s in a Cat’s Name? In a book with a snarky anti-hero who teaches literature to the great unwashed youth of the day, there are bound to be a few literary references. You’ll catch most of them…but…why did Arthur name the cat Maltese and why does he think it’s clever? Arthur Byrne is a protagonist you’ll root for despite your best efforts not to. His love of drink, age inappropriate women, and disdain for authority, are the top three reasons the president of the university wants him gone. Arthur’s decades long writer’s block is the only reason he stays. He’s got nowhere to go. Wen Hu is an enthusiastic teaching assistant that doesn’t get most of Arthur’s jokes.
