He is an Aerospace Engineer, Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society, ex-Chairman Royal Aeronautical Society Rotorcraft Committee, author of aviation books and articles, aircraft owner and private pilot, and aviation photographer. His books include the five volume British Built Aircraft series (The History Press), Cessna 172: A Pocket History (Amberley Publishing) and most recently, Piper Cherokee: A Family History. Jim Smith is a senior manager at the Australian Defence Science and Technology Organisation - DSTO. He trained as an aeronautical engineer, with BSc and Masters degrees from the University of Southampton in the UK. Before moving to Australia, Jim worked for the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) for 28 years, with a further 10 years in DSTO.
