Contemporary Indigenous Arts in the Classroom (English and French Edition)

CONTEMPORARY INDIGENOUS ARTS IN THE CLASSROOM provides elementary and high school-level teachers with curriculum-linked lesson plans designed by contemporary Indigenous artists. The goal is to build students' cultural competence and respect for diverse Indigenous peoples, while encouraging critical thinking about colonialism. The springboard is provided by looking at the work by two artists: Jaime Koebel (Metis, Cree) and Barry Ace (Anishinaabe). Jaime Koebel's work Superhero Plant Trading Cards encourages children to develop an awareness of their own personal strengths and a respect for the strengths of others. Barry Ace's (re)Mapping Place teaches children about the role of maps in the colonial erasure of Indigenous peoples from Canada s history. Original essays contextualize each artist's practice and are accompanied by a glossary of terms, image sections, and general lesson plans. Also featured are a bibliography, a list of suggested readings, and a listing of free on-line resources.
