Description:
From Introduction: "In her posthumous collection 'Mystery and Manners', Flannery O'Connor mentions a correspondent who asked if she thought creative writing programs were ruining writers. 'If so,' O'Connor replied, 'they're not ruining enough of them.' O'Connor was known, of course, for her astringent wit and she was herself a graduate of the oldest and most famous writing program in the country, the Iowa Writers workshop, but the idea that writing programs are somehow not only not helping but are actually impeding the writing of fiction and poetry persists. Authors as different as Saul Bellow, Robert Stone and Nelson Algren have written on the subject and hardly a month goes by without one periodical or another exposing the sham of creative writing in the academy. An old joke has it that half the cab drivers in New York City have Iowa M.F.A.s, which may not be too far from the truth. Beyond the charge that creative writing instructors are guilty of claiming they can teach the unteachable, that is, creativity, the major criticism seems to be one of encouraging blandness. There is talk of the so-called 'workshop' poem or short story, long on craft and short of passion, and the phenomenon of 'writing for the workshop rather than for oneself or for posterity. These are serious concerns, or they would be if it were true that teaching craft somehow drives out idiosyncratic passion. But this has never been shown to be the case. No teacher would ever claim credit for the accomplishments of superb writers, but far from being harmed by the growth of writing workshops, literature seems to be alive and well, at least on campus."--David Milofsky
