Industrial Fire Protection

Industrial Fire Protection provides an understanding of both the practical and theoretical aspects of fire prevention and protection. It delves into the prevention of fires through design, environment, and protection options. It also examines the legal and regulatory issues, the organizations that issue those laws and regulations, and how to address laws and regulations in developing fire prevention and protection plans.

This textbook also examines how chemistry, physics, and aerodynamics play a part in fire dynamics, and using mathematical and scientific models to predict fire behaviors such as heat transfer, burn rates, spread, flashovers and backdrafts.

These are just several important subjects discussed in Chapter 5. In the next chapter, Benchmarking and Performance Criteria, different schedules for inspection, testing and maintenance of fire protection equipment are discussed, as are the requirements for plant inspectors. In Best Practices, the last chapter, Craig Brown, discusses facility layout and construction considerations for fire safety, including equipment spacing, fireproofing, and electrical classification; legal requirements and life safety in building design. Also included is a detailed discussion of fire-extinguishing system selection and best practices. Other best practices discussed include: material storage, inspection and testing of buildings for fire safety, testing of fire protection equipment, and investigating and reporting on fire losses.
