In the warmth of the kitchen the childhood stumbling blocks & triumphs of African-American life models including neurosurgeon Dr. Ben Carson, broadcast journalist Ed Bradley, dancer Judith Jamison, actor Robert Townsend, & producer Camille Cosby are explored. Family traditions, special recipes, food memories, & dreams encouraged through conversations, all combine to show that regardless of background, or size, or income, or region of the country, the human family soars when it connects. Recipes included in "Our Family Table" have been refined to reflect a more healthy style of eating with less added salt & fat. Color photographs of participants bring the book to life. The cover is a reproduction of a quilt made by Willia Ette Graham, an octogenarian who was taught the art of quilting from her great-grandmother, who was a slave.
