Olympic Moose Salami and Other Lillehammer Tales
Description:
In the winter of 1994, the Winter Olympics returned to Norway, birthplace of skiing and the place where you can buy moose salami. George Hesselberg, who speaks Norwegian, was sent - actually, he begged to be sent - to Lillehammer to cover the games and the games behind the games. He filed several stories every day (!) on such topics as Tonya Harding, the speedskating controversies, the journalists who wore inappropriate socks, the only black speedskater and the Swede who was hired to remove the "gold" from the top of a mountain. These were filed daily for the Wisconsin State Journal, many of them are hilarious and all are interesting. At the time he was in Norway, his wife, Else Karlsen, and two young sons were living in Eidanger, teaching (Else) and going to school, while living with Else's parents. It was an adventure, and Hesselberg not only captured the Wisconsin contingent, but all of the strange happenings besides. NOT your usual collection of stories about sports heroes.
