Symons spent much of his life in France and Italy; he knew many of the artists and writers of the fin-de-siècle period, including Aubrey Beardsley, Algernon Swinburne, Walter Pater, Edmund Gosse, Joseph Conrad, W.B. Yeats, and Stéphane Mallarmé.
