Scrawl Too: More Dirt

This is public art, 21st century style. Whether working on sleeves, 'zines, walls or canvas, these street-inspired artists talk their own language mixing media, metaphor, technologies and techniques. Using spray cans, brushes, stencils, xerox machines, collage, computers, video and film to create an intense mix of raw/slick, humour/horror, cute/cruel imagery, this is a visual equivalent of contemporary music and its complexity.
Scrawl: Dirty Graphics and Strange Characters was the first survey of this phenomenon. The tradition of graffiti, with its notions of youthful rebellion, outsider identity, urban tribalism, aesthetic and technical innovation, was the starting point. The street, the rejuvenation of comic-book artistry and the style, the rhythms of hip-hop and beat-based music, is its inspiration. Since then, this process-led visual revolution has spread to become truly international. Scrawl Too showcases work worldwide and looks at the different schools that are establishing their own dynamic creative identity.
