Aiming to help children understand everyday objects and events around them, this book on communications is one of a series which introduces young readers to basic scientific concepts. With extensive illustrations it shows how we communicate through the use of fax machines, televisions, radios, computers, telephones and sound systems. The history of printing and methods of printing used today are explained; the mechanics of the telephone, optical fibres, telegraph and fax machines are made easy to understand and an experiment using a light bulb, a battery and three pieces of wire for sending morse code is described. Signs and signals too are used to communicate information. To illustrate this there are instructions for the making of a traffic light. To simplify the explanation of sound waves it is suggested that a balloon is held near a loudspeaker. The vibrations of sound will vibrate the balloon. This explanation is intended to make it easier to uhderstand radio, television, loudspeakers and microphones. There is also a very simple introduction to computers.
