From the Mediterranean to the China Sea, the Silk Routes stretched for over 8000 kilometres through the heart of Asia. They crossed some of the most dangerous and spectacular terrain on Earth--the Pamir Mountains, called "the Roof of the World," the Hind Kush and the notorious Taklamakan desert, whose shifting sands have been known to swallow up great cities.
