Pre-Raphaelite to Arts and Crafts Jewellery
Description:
Previously published as "Artists' Jewellery - Pre-Raphaelite to Arts and Crafts", this revised edition records the Pre-Raphaelite period of jewellery design. The Pre-Raphaelites formed one of the four great artistic movements between the mid-1880s and the early 1900s. They were characterized by a rebellious outlook, a distaste for convention and an admiration for the early Renaissance. They believed that decoration as an art form was as worthy as painting and sculpture. Jewellery, often as a symbol of love, was a particularly attractive medium for them. Towards the end of the 19th century their ideas were superseded by the Arts and Crafts Movement with a return to simpler, plain designs which incorporated straight lines and little intricate detail. Artists involved include Dante Gabriel Rossetti, William Morris, William Holman Hunt, Sir Edwin Lutyens and Charles Voysey.
