This is the story of what happens when a wolf pack learns, against all odds, how to survive the constant threat of airplane hunters. Told through the eyes of Kit, a young teen and son of the superintendent of Gates of the Arctic National Park, the action takes place in and around the remote frontier Koyukuk River settlement of Whiskey Rock, Alaska, population 71.A mid air collision involving a top aerial gunner and a series of remarkable escapes over several years garner the Magic Pack increasingly sensational media attention. The wolves’ unprecedented stealth techniques defy conventional wisdom. The longer the wolves survive, the more passion they unleash. Hunters flock to Whiskey Rock using planes and snow machines to try and bag what many have begun calling hunting’s greatest prize. But the ability and courage of the Magic Pack also begin to draw activists who come to “save” them.Five distinct groups—the locals, controlled by the three Jones brothers and driven by their frontier values; the growing population of hippies, loosely led by Kit’s sister a twenty two year-old firebrand activist; the Native Alaskans, led by the Chief, a traditional Athabaskan elder; the aerial wolf hunters; and the Park Service rangers—are all thrown together to fight over the fate of the Magic Pack.
