Set in the 17th century and filled with marvels and terrors, it tells the story of a young man named Pierre who has left his home in Philadelphia to find his father who he believes has taken up living somewhere in Europe. Soon after Pierre embarks on that sea voyage he hopes will unite them, his ship is destroyed by a gigantic sea monster. With that, our hero's adventure truly begins.\nAgainst a backdrop of piracy on the high seas and with harrowing encounters as he is apparently pursued by the beast, Pierre makes his adventurous way across the Caribbean and the South Atlantic and enters the Mediterranean. There, he is introduced to a mysterious character who may be the guiding hand behind his entire adventure and who appears determined to lure Pierre to a final and climactic confrontation with the creature.\nAn exciting and wildly-imagined adventure, the novel weaves elements of early scientific experiment with ghosts and disembodied voices along with pirates of every variety and an unlikely romance, and all of it overshadowed by a powerful and terrifying beast even as at the story's center lurks a remarkable and elusive antagonist.
