Product Description
OVERVIEW:
Perceptual drawing, in which one renders the physical world as it appears to an observer, is the focus of this frequently-adopted text for skill-based perceptual drawing courses. With an emphasis on carefully sequenced skill development, Drawing from Observation offers clear explanations of hands-on techniques positioned within a broad educational framework thereby delivering a compelling argument for the value of perception-based drawing as an essential tool for nurturing artistic self-awareness.\nMORE ABOUT THE BOOK:
Currently being used in over 250 colleges and universities in the United States, Australia, Singapore and South Africa, Drawing from Observation grew out of the understanding that there are fundamental, broad-based educational benefits to be gained by learning to draw from observation. For at least six hundred years perceptual drawing has been considered the premier course of study for developing visual sensitivity as it not only provides developing artists with a structured series of exercises that train the eye to be discriminating and the hand to be sensitive in its touch but also provide insight into the very mechanisms of visual perception itself. While this book is primarily intended to develop one's ability to accurately record visual perceptions it is also meant to provide an understanding of spatial representation in general. Fortunately, there is no more suitable vantage point from which to encounter the visual art of the past, present, and future than the platform of rationalized perceptual space that was introduced during the Renaissance by Brunelleschi, Alberti, Piero, and Leonardo. When all is said and done, it is the understanding that is derived from knowing how images make spatial meaning that is the most fundamental and therefore the most important of all artistic tools.\nThis drawing text book is very different from the all others that are currently available. Highly focused, this text focuses heavily on the techniques and underlying concepts that are essential to anyone seeking to translate three-dimensional perceptual information to a two-dimensional surface.\nDrawing From Observation weaves together two complementary approaches: one rooted in hands-on drawing mechanics, and the other in background theory and/or explanatory material. Illustrating the text throughout, in addition to 50 master works are 300 technical illustrations and 300 student projects.\nThis second edition includes a thorough and generously illustrated chapter on Pictorial Composition that when combined with the lessons in the preceding chapters will provided the necessary mechanisms to create convincing and engaging spatial images from anything you might see or imagine. The second edition also contains 103 new student drawings, 96 new technical illustrations, and 25 new master images.
About the Author
Brian Curtis has been teaching studio art at the college level for nearly 40 years. He is a representational painter whose most recent series of paintings focused on dramatic skies above the ancient stone monument in England known as Stonehenge. He is now returning to psycho-mythological narratives that explore transitional, tentative moments that occur between times of purposeful activity. In an age that is often categorized as being in a state of perpetual crisis he seeks, by monumentalizing the ordinary, to reveal the shared emotional core that is embedded in everyday experience.\nIn the spring of 1999 Brian was awarded the Dean of Arts and Sciences Excellence in Teaching award, was a finalist for the University of Miami's Excellence in Teaching Award for 1999 and 2000, and was nominated for the Foundations in Art Theory and Education Master Educator Award in both 2011 and 2015.\nBrian is currently working on a third edition of Drawing from Observation which will include two new chapters on Figure Drawing. He also intends to refresh the text and images throughout the e
