Above all, these tales pay tribute to the author's parents who both possessed an unmitigated pride. Dad was proud of what he could accomplish, whether it was the ability to write a three dollar check to feed his family during the depression or something else. Mama, on the other hand, possessed a pride in self, of whom she was, rather than what she could do. Hudson relates with compassion the Christmas of 1931 and how it brought out a tenderness in her Dad that the harshness of his daily life did not allow him to exhibit ordinarily; and of how her mother always seemed to have a knack for meeting the needs of her family in spite of a lack of money.
