It is written from a sociological perspective based upon a lifetime of experience and study of the American Indian, oral histories gathered from visiting over forty reservations, the work of many scholars, the contributions of many friends and kind strangers who provided knowledge that would have otherwise not been available. It is my hope that it will offer an analysis that will allow others to appreciate and better understand the plight, hope, and practices of some American Indian groups, and that it will allow those who study the material to better face their own dying and deaths as well as those of others.
