Jude the Obscure: Curriculum Unit

Geared towards advanced students, this unit helps students develop the critical thinking and research skills needed for college work. Using a variety of interactive, creative, and individual activities, ten lessons begin with an introduction to Victorian culture and then move chronologically through the novel, examining Thomas Hardy's life and its correspondence with the novel. Specific activities include character analysis, comparing and contrasting with the classical structure of tragedy, creative rewriting, role playing, researching cultural history, identifying major literary movements, examining setting, reading original contemporary reviews, conducting biographical research on Hardy, and researching allusions in the work.
