Modern Trial Advocacy: Analysis and Practice--Canada

Modern Trial Advocacy: Canada has set the standard for trial advocacy texts since 1995. Each chapter contains a thorough discussion on preparation, analysis, techniques, and ethics. Sheila Block, partner and senior trial and appellate counsel with Torys, Toronto, and Cynthia Tape, an associate with Torys, Toronto, practicing civil litigation, have provided Canadian case and statutory references.

The second edition of Modern Trial Advocacy contains three significant changes. A new chapter on Trial Tools summarizes the various persuasive techniques that can be used throughout the trial. Rather than focus on specific aspects of a trial-such as opening statement or cross-examination-this chapter presents an overview of how lawyers can present information in the most persuasive manner. Following that theme, the new chapter on Persuasion Theory discusses the process of juror (and judge) decision making, applying important insights from the fields of psychology and cognition theory. Finally, the chapter on Jury Selection has been significantly expanded.
