Missouri Genealogical Records and Abstracts, Volume 4: 1741-1839
Description:
Volume four contains the earliest records yet compiled by the author in this valuable series. Anyone seeking Missouri ancestors will quickly find himself tangled in the history of the region, which changed hands between France, Spain, and the U. S. and whose boundaries often included the neighboring territories of Orleans and Indiana. Straying ancestors also tended to spill into Arkansas, Louisiana, Illinois, Kentucky, and Tennessee. The author has simplified the search by including many records from these areas. The researcher will find the usual birth, marriage, and death records as well as tax lists, wills, letters at the post office, jury lists, loan reports, and other information from forty-nine counties. Some of the specific county sections include more recent records, such as the Webster County Poor Farm records of 1883. Also featured is a section on statewide/territorial documents containing French and Spanish prisoners on the U.S. Connecticut and the U.S. Constellation in 1799 and 1800, passengers arriving at New Orleans from January 3, 1820 to May 29, 1821, and appointments by the Governor, 1810-1811. The Missourians out-of-state section includes the 1860 Jeffersonville, Indiana, penitentiary census; Missouri war veterans in Iowa from the War of 1812, Mexican War, and Revolutionary War; and obituaries and tax lists from Kentucky, Kansas, Texas, Arkansas, and Tennessee, just to name a few. French "dit" names (aliases) are included in the vast surname index. This volume covers the following counties: Andew, Audrain, Barry, Bates, Boone, Buchannan, Cape Girardeau, Carroll, Cass, Cedar, Chariton, Clark, Clay, Clinton, Cooper, Dade, Franklin, Gasconade, Henry, Hickory, Howard, Iron, Jasper, Johnson, Laclede, Lafayette, Lawrence, Lewis, Lincoln, Maries, Marion, Monroe, Morgan, Nodaway, Osage, Perry, Platte, Pulaski, Ralls, Ray, Reynolds, Saline, Scotland, Stoddard, St. Charles, Ste. Genevieve, St. Louis, Washington and Webster.
