Roberts was given his commission as second lieutenant of Company "D" of the Ranger Battalion; he would remain with them for the next eight years.\nDuring his time with the rangers Roberts was active in not only protecting settlers, quelling unrest and arresting stage coach robbers but also assisting the United States Army in surveying and building roads.\nAfter having only been with the rangers for five months, Captain Rufe Perry resigned as captain of Company D, and Lieutenant Roberts was appointed to take command of the company.\nRangers and Sovereignty is full of fascinating episodes such as the 1875 Mason County War that Roberts played an instrumental part in putting down or his expedition into Mexico to apprehend outlaws.\nWhen Roberts attempted to tender his resignation with the Rangers in 1875 due to the fact he was marrying Luvenia Conway his commanding officer, Major B. Jones, thought he was too good an officer to lose and so offered that his new wife should come and live in the rangers camp as well, "happily, she agreed to the programme, and appeared to think it the climax of all the romance she had ever indulged in."\n"Dan W. He lived out his days in Austin, Texas, with his wife Luvenia. His account of his time with the Texas Rangers, Rangers and Sovereignty was published in 1914. He passed away in 1935.
