Could, this be…. Lit-tle rub-ber man…. Or, man with hair of-girl…?!” Keith Matthews was a vastly talented actor, musician, theatre director, performed playwright and charity bookshop manager. He performed in many plays and his artistic career lasted over forty five years. As well as being an expert on the UK radio game show Just a Minute (on which he contributed to two published books) he also found time to write a large number of plays, sitcom episodes, poems, short stories and novel length works. 'Save Our Souls' (or SOS) is the first of a collection of sit-com screenplays set in a charity shop that show his talent, his outrageous sense of humour, and his ability to create huge yet deep characters. In this (the last) edition of Save Our Souls: Volume Seven, we have the Christmas special, which would have slotted in between series one & two, plus two beginning episodes of what would have been the fourth series, a stage play which he intended for the Edinburgh festival: and a number of incomplete episodes, scenes and ideas. Included in this bumper edition are the episodes: ‘All I want For Christmas is an SOS Nativity’, ‘The Sweet Birds of No Man’s Land’, ‘Winifred’s Wailing Whales Went to Kosovo’, ‘Up And Away…. And Where Are We?’ Once again we follow volunteer charity shop workers Norma, Cherie, Rapido, Francesco, Garry, Edgar and Nathaniel, Sally, Delford, Rocky, Minnie & Sister Maria perform their own interpretation of the Christmas Nativity on the Saint Saviours stage. Expect raucous behaviour and a God called Rufus Van Jizz, as you hiss and boo with the humble church audience to help the save the church fund. A surprising old dog won’t lie down and soon it is clear that old enemies are never far away from the SOS gang. And a man with more than a little extra in the trouser department has gotten quite a few or the team hot under the collar. Will our gang be able to keep the shop going and deal with external forces and each other…?
