Excerpt from The Pipe-Rolls, or Sheriff's Annual Accounts of the Revenues of the Crown for the Counties of Cumberland, Westmorland, and Durham, During the Reigns of Henry II., Richard I., And John: Published by the Society of Antiquaries of Newcastle Upon TyneThe Pipe Rolls for Northumberland, to the close of the reign of Henry the Third, have been already given to the world by the late Rev. John Hodgson, the accomplished Historian of that County. The Records in the present volume extend only to the death of King John, embracing that period which is most destitute of authentic historical and topographical information. On a future occasion they may perhaps be continued through the succeeding reign, and thus be made to correspond with the Northumberland series. In the meantime it has been thought expedient, that the publication should include the early Pipe Rolls of Durham, the only other county which is excluded from the Doomsday survey. These are few in number, the Crown having no interest in the revenues of the Palatinate of Durham, except during a vacancy of the See. The Westmorland Rolls do not embrace the entire reign of John, the revenues of that county having become, by grant, the pro perty of a subject.In order correctly to understand the circumstances of the several counties to which the documents in the present volume refer, it will be useful to take a brief review of the political changes to which the anglo-saxon Kingdom of Northumberland was subject.
