John Charles Ryle (10 May 1816 – 10 June 1900) was an Anglican minister and was the first Anglican bishop of Liverpool. His original intention, after studying at Eton and Oxford, was to stand for parliament. His father’s bankruptcy prevented him following this ambition and he took holy orders becoming curate at Exbury in Hampshire. He transferred, in 1843, to St Thomas, Winchester before moving on to Helmingham, Suffolk. He remained in this charge until 1861 when he exchanged it for Stradbroke. After spells in Hoxne and Norwich he was selected to be preacher at Cambridge and then Oxford before becoming dean of Salisbury in 1880. This was short lived as he advanced to the newly created see of Liverpool were e remained until his death in 1900. Ryle was an evangelical and championed preaching as a means to reach men and women. His strong doctrinal basis has made him a much admired and loved author who still helps preachers today through his writings and, particularly, these commentaries on the four Gospels.
