The Yellow Wallpaper

Told in a journal like fashion, “The Yellow Wallpaper” is narrated by a nineteenth century woman whose husband, a physician, has rented an old mansion for the summer to provide her an opportunity to recuperate from what he describes as “a temporary nervous depression." He insists that she refrain from all work, but with nothing to stimulate her she becomes obsessed with the pattern and color of the wallpaper. The story has been cited as a condemnation of the androcentric hegemony of the 19th-century medical profession, and is largely regarded as one of the most important feminist texts ever written.
