Themore confident you are in your interview skills and your ability to detect deception,the greater the frequency and thoroughness of success. If someone is lying to you,and the suspect gets the slightest hint that you are buying it or are unsure, he/she islikely to continue lying. Inversely proportional, the more confident you are indetecting deception, the less confident the suspect will be in perpetrating the liebecause he or she will see that it is not having the desired effect on you. Yourconfidence level is crucial to the process. You increase your confidence level by, first,acquiring knowledge, and, then, by practicing and living out the concepts each andevery time you conduct an interview. As has always been true of skill-building, themore you practice the skill, the better you will become.Paul Francois is a retired lieutenant from the San Jose Police Department with 29 years of law enforcement experience. Paul's previous assignments include: Patrol Watch Commander, Detective and Supervisor in the Physical Child Abuse Unit, Detective in the Sexual Assault Investigation Unit, Field Training Program Supervisor, and the Office of the Chief of Police in Research and Development. Paul has also received the Police Academy Instructor of the Year Award.Sgt. Enrique Garcia has been with the San Jose Police Department since 1986. He was a Reserve Officer for 5 years while working as a Department Manager in the High Tech industry. Enrique is currently assigned as a patrol supervisor. He has worked assignments as a Field Training Officer, Detective in the Sexual Assault Investigation Unit, Detective in the Homicide Unit, Detective in the Robbery Unit, and as the Public Information Officer.Enrique has also received the 2005 Investigative Excellence Award, California P.O.S.T. - Robert Presley Institute of Criminal Investigation.Paul & Enrique have been team teaching Interviewing & Interrogation together since 1997.
