The Oregon Trail

In April of 1846, Francis Parkman, Jr. set out from St. Louis on a voyage of adventure into the Rocky Mountains. He began his trip on the celebrated Oregon Trail. This is his story. This is a tale of buffalo, horses, wagons, Indians, of hardship and privation, but also, it is a story of great wonder and beauty at the unlimited scope of the Prairies and Mountains of the West. Parkman and his friends had some interesting adventures, and spent some time with the Ogallalla Indians, who he became friendly with. His tale is a saga of the old West, before Western civilization had made many inroads on the land. It is well written, and full of much Indian lore and Frontier lore. Enjoy, if you will, this trip into a time almost forgotten.
